Menswear 101: Introduction

December 1st, 2014

Menswear is deeply rooted in history and tradition. During our grandfather’s generation (the 1930s; the height of elegant dress) there were “rules” for men’s dress that were developed as a code of ethics and elegance. These “rules” are still an important reference point for men’s style today. As the old saying goes, “you have to know the rules before you can break them”.

That’s why we developed Menswear 101; to educate men on the historical significance and technical aspects of menswear. Our goal is to provide our readers with the knowledge to make informed buying decisions and have intelligent conversations about style. Since “fashion” can be an intimidating arena to enter as someone who is newly interested, we also hope that this section can serve as a jumping-off point and provide some context to our other articles.

Most importantly, I think it’s important to note that style is not innate. Like any other skill, dressing well can be learned through learning, observation, imitation, and practice. I’m a great example: farmboy, turned basketball player, turned “best dressed man in America”.

The articles in Menswear 101 will contain a lot of what I’ve learned in my 8 years in the menswear industry (as a buyer, a designer, a pattern-maker, and a blogger) as well as tips and guides from several experts whom I’ve come to know in the industry.

Here’s what you can expect in this section:

  • Buying advice & clothing care tips from manufacturing experts
  • Fit advice from professional tailors and pattern-makers
  • A historical look at menswear and how past traditions affect style today
  • Answers to your questions about fashion & style

As always, if you have a question about fashion or style feel free to contact us. Thanks for reading!

Yours in style,

Dan Trepanier
