“A Look Only I Can Wear” feat. Maor Cohen

November 18th, 2013

Maor Cohen is a jewelry designer who’s traveled the world to develop a truly unique personal style.

When Alex and I first moved to Los Angeles we attended an event at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills to network with fashion execs and introduce ourselves to Hollywood brand managers. The style scene was fairly corporate; mostly grey and navy suits, maybe a cool leather jacket or two in the mix. Then Maor Cohen walked in. He was immediately the most stylish and interesting-looking person in the room, absolutely owning an outfit than nobody else could pull-off, or even think of pulling off.

“I was born and raised in a small beach village in the north of Israel and now, at 31 years old, I’m raising my amazing 2-year-old son Levi in Venice Beach California.

My career began to take flight when i started custom designing jewelry and accessories for some of Israel’s celebrities and socialites. I then decided to take some time to travel and gain inspiration from surrounding cultures. After exploring and spending much time in europe and central america, I eventually ended up in Los Angeles and incorporated matchless pieces that I had collected from my travels into my work (and style).

My personal aesthetic comes from years of traveling and the people that I’ve met from all over the world.

Normally people wouldn’t wear what I wear. It’s edgy, it’s avant-garde…but it’s my style and my self expression!

I twist the classic look and create something that only I can wear.”

1. A World of Inspiration

Maor’s style consists of well-made (often handmade) avant-garde pieces from obscure designers that he’s discovered throughout this travels around the world. And of course, you can’t forget his signature jewelry. The guy wears more jewelry than anyone I’ve ever met.

He layers impressively-intricate pieces that he’s collected and designed over the years, ranging from simple beaded strings to unbelievable bracelets flooded in black diamonds. Most of which he never takes off.

In his collection M.Cohen, there’s “a little something for every guy, from classic to edgy” but what Maor really loves is designing custom pieces for his clients.

“It’s always easy and fun for me to Identify their style and create something that they can add to their individual look – something to become their conversational piece.”

His clothing, like his designs, have a textural depth and a slightly distressed aesthetic – all done in a tasteful and intriguing way.

2. One of One

What I like most about Maor’s style is that he seeks out pieces that are very rare. He often wears one-off samples or designs that were made in limited quantities.

He then makes his look even more unique and personal with a plethora of accessories, each of which has it’s own inspiration and story.

“I get a lot of my inspiration from nature. Once a year i take a trip to Nevada’s Black Rock City Desert to experience self reliance, self expression and the opportunity to connect with amazing artist of all types.”

This is not your typical blazer, button-down and trouser combo.

“Avant-garde twist would be the best way to go!”

“The Individual Sentiments ‘scrunched’ trouser is the best piece of this look…the unique scrunched detail ads an edgy feel that not everybody can get away with… Amazing pair of pants.”

3. T-Shirt & Jeans

Maor’s looks are actually fairly simple. It’s the accessories that really tell the story.

“My everyday outfits revolve around the the accessories I design… They make my ensemble more interesting and unique… It would not be the same look without them.”

Looking closely at Maor’s jewelry, and hearing some of the stories behind the pieces, reminded me of looking closely at Grayson’s tattoos. Each one has a specific inspiration and recalls some memorable life experience.

Look closely.

Of course, we know that Maor’s style if not going to be for everyone. It’s not meant to be.
